The re-birthing of an expansive 100 year old weatherboard farmhouse with unique timber details.
The house was built between 1915 and 1920 by one of the early dairy farmers on a large property in the delightful town of Bangalow. Northern NSW.
When the new owners bought the heritage listed house it was in a severely dilapidated state with most of the original verandah's enclosed with fibro and glass.
We re-configured the entire house with subtle strategic changes, to respond to the heritage listing and retain the existing character of the house. These changes included new entry stairs, new bathrooms around the perimeter, new master bedroom and ensuite + new kitchen and dining area with new connections to the front living rooms. We also added a large pool and cabana in the spacious garden.
Incredibly, the heritage listing for the house included the 'innovative use of a new material' at the time – asbestos! All internal walls were lined with asbestos, which had to be carefully removed, after a lengthy approvals process with Council. The ceiling and floorboards were retained and meticulously restored.
The house is one of only 5 buildings still in existence that were designed by a prominent builder of the time, Mr Arthur E Beckinsale. These fabulous houses all share similar timber detailing and can be found around Bangalow for those interested to look.
